The final funeral rites for the late mother of the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Obuasi West, Faustilove Kannin, took a tragic turn on Saturday, November 29, 2025, after the Dompoasehene, Nana Kwabena Ponko, was shot in what is believed to be an assassination attempt.
The incident, which unfolded at the funeral grounds in Obuasi, threw the solemn ceremony into panic and confusion as mourners fled for safety. Nana Kwabena Ponko, a highly respected traditional leader, had just taken his seat when an unidentified assailant opened fire on him.
He was immediately rushed to the Obuasi Government Hospital, where sources say he was stabilised upon arrival. However, authorities are yet to issue an official update on his condition, leaving the community deeply anxious.
Swift intervention by attendees and on-site security led to the swift arrest of the suspected shooter, who was handed over to the Ghana Police Service. The suspect is currently in custody and undergoing interrogation as part of efforts to determine the motive behind the brazen attack.
Police have since cordoned off the area and launched a full-scale investigation into the shooting. The motive for the attempted assassination remains unclear, heightening public concern and speculation.
Residents and traditional authorities are eagerly awaiting further updates on the Dompoasehene’s recovery and the progress of the police investigation.
