Dennis Miracles Aboagye, an aide to the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) 2024 presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has reportedly been arrested by officers of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) at the Accra International Airport.
Senior officials of the NPP confirmed the arrest to Citi News.
In a Facebook post, the party’s General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, alleged that EOCO officers, with the assistance of immigration officials, arrested Mr. Aboagye and took him into custody.
According to Mr. Kodua, lawyers representing Mr. Aboagye have been denied access to their client, while his current whereabouts remain unknown. He further claimed that no formal charges have been brought against him.
The NPP General Secretary called on the authorities to immediately grant Mr. Aboagye unrestricted access to his lawyers and family, citing Article 14(2) of the 1992 Constitution, which guarantees the rights of persons in custody.
Mr. Kodua described the arrest as an act of political intimidation rather than a legitimate law enforcement action. He alleged that it forms part of a broader pattern of politically motivated arrests, invitations, and detentions targeting members of the opposition party.
He further cautioned state institutions against allowing themselves to be used for political purposes, stressing that public agencies must act within the confines of the law and uphold the constitutional rights of all citizens.
Despite the development, Mr. Kodua urged NPP supporters to remain calm, law-abiding, and united as the party seeks clarification on the circumstances surrounding Mr. Aboagye’s arrest.
