A rift has emerged between the Ghana Revenue Authority’s (GRA) Customs Division and National Security over claims of rerouted goods bound for Burkina Faso.
This controversy comes after National Security operatives in the Ashanti Region on July 13 impounded seven trucks suspected to be used in the diversion of goods.
According to officials, drivers transporting the goods from the Tema Port claim their final destination is Burkina Faso but end up unloading the goods in Kumasi to evade the payment of the required duty on them.
However, the Customs Division has fiercely contested these claims, characterizing them as “inaccurate and misleading.”
“We’re surprised by the claims, and we believe they’re unfounded,” said Customs Deputy Commissioner Peter Ofori Antobreh in an interview with Citinews.
According to him, the vehicles were under the surveillance of the Customs Division, and they had seen no evidence of diversion during their monitoring.
Antobreh emphasized that the trucks were being monitored by Customs, and there was no wrongdoing. “The vehicles were on the right path, and we didn’t detect any irregularities,” he added.
