Court remands five in connection with assault of teacher at Kade Senior High

The Kade District Court in the Eastern Region has remanded five accused persons in connection with the brutal assault of Michael Quayson, a teacher at Kade Senior High Technical School, after they pleaded guilty to the charges.

Four of the accused persons are adults, while the fifth accused is a 17-year-old juvenile whose case is being handled in accordance with the Juvenile Justice Act.

The court ordered that all five accused persons reappear on January 20, 2026, with the juvenile’s case to be heard separately by a Juvenile Court.

Family members and some of the accused persons broke down in tears as they were put into a police vehicle and driven away after the proceedings.

Speaking to the media after the court sitting, the Eastern Regional Chairman of the National Association of Graduate Teachers, Mr. Awoonor-Yevu Godwin, expressed satisfaction with the outcome, describing it as a clear signal that indiscipline in schools will not be tolerated.

“As a union, we are very happy with the outcome of the court proceedings. The accused persons admitted their guilt in the presence of the judge, and we believe justice is being served.”

Mr. Awoonor-Yevu disclosed that although eight persons were involved in the attack, only five have so far been arrested, adding that three suspects are still at large and are being actively pursued by the police.

He further praised the presiding judge, describing him as a principled individual committed to maintaining discipline within educational institutions.

“We are confident that when the court sits again on January 20, the judge will not mince words. His posture clearly shows his commitment to discipline and justice,” he noted.

The Eastern Regional Chairman of NAGRAT used the opportunity to caution students across the country to be mindful of their conduct and remain focused on their education.

“Students are in school to learn. They should not allow bad influence from friends to derail their future. At the end of the day, they must be able to further their education and become productive members of society,” he said.

Mr. Awoonor-Yevu also expressed gratitude to the Inspector-General of Police for the swift response following the union’s press conference, noting that it helped avert an intended indefinite sit-down strike by teachers.

He further commended the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service and the Eastern Regional Director of Education, Dr. Ivy Uso-Asantewa, for their commitment and relentless efforts to ensure that justice is served.

In December 2025, the National Association of Graduate Teachers issued a 14-day ultimatum to the Ghana Education Service and the Ghana Police Service, demanding the immediate arrest and prosecution of all persons involved in the assault of a teacher at Kade Senior High Technical School.

The victim, Michael Quayson, was ambushed on the evening of October 5, 2025, by eight individuals while returning home from town.

He was allegedly beaten for nearly 20 minutes for enforcing strict supervision on the students during examinations.

A video of the attack later went viral on social media, sparking nationwide outrage among teachers and the general public.
