Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo has become the centerpiece of online discussion, drawing both sympathy and criticism across social media following her removal from office.
Yesterday, September 1, 2025, President John Dramani Mahama formally removed Chief Justice Torkornoo from office, after receiving the report from the committee that was set up to investigate the petitions that had been made agaisnt her earlier this year.
The removal was based on the committee’s recommendation after it found grounds of “stated misbehaviour” under Article 146(1) of the 1992 Constitution.
This marks the first time a Chief Justice has been removed since Ghana returned to democracy in 1992.
