The Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, has confirmed that the black box from the Ghana Armed Forces Z-9 helicopter that crashed in the Adansi Akrofuom District on August 6 killing 8, has been retrieved.
The black box is a small but vital device on board aircraft that records what the pilots said and what the helicopter was doing before the crash including speed, altitude, and system performance.
This will help investigators determine exactly what went wrong leading to the crash.
This accident led to the tragic death of Minister for Defence, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, and the Minister for Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation, Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed.
The others that passed in the crash included Muniru Mohammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator, Samuel Aboagye, a former Parliamentary Candidate, and Samuel Sarpong, Vice Chairman of the NDC.
The three crew members, Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah, also died.
The Ghana Armed Forces and Civil Aviation Authority are leading the investigation. Results from the black box can take days or weeks to be completed.
