Bawumia among 3 most popular politicians in Ghana – Aide to Dr. Bawumia

Bawumia among 3 most popular politicians in Ghana - Aide to Dr. Bawumia

An aide to Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Kwesi Botchway Jnr, says the former Vice President remains one of the three most popular politicians in Ghana, alongside President John Dramani Mahama and former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

According to Mr. Botchway, this popularity gives Dr. Bawumia and advantage in the upcoming New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer elections.

Speaking on Channel One on October 15, Kwesi Botchway expressed strong confidence that the former Vice President will win the New Patriotic Party (NPP)’s upcoming flagbearer election.

“I am confident and I’m clear in my mind that the delegates would vote for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia come 31st January,” he stated.

He explained that Dr. Bawumia continues to be at the centre of national political discussions even after leaving office.

“We all know that currently in Ghana, if you want three politicians who are very popular, it is the sitting president, the former vice president, and maybe the former president,” he said.

“Because day in, day out, we are discussing Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, we’re discussing President Mahama, or we’re discussing President Akufo-Addo.”

Mr. Botchway pointed out that both President Mahama and former President Akufo-Addo have exhausted their constitutional terms and cannot contest again, leaving Dr. Bawumia as the next major political figure.

“After President Mahama, it is Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia who the good people of this country know,” he said.

“In fact, the NPP would have an advantage if we present Dr. Bawumia because the NDC are going to go through the same struggles we are going through now.”

He described the National Democratic Congress (NDC)’s next flagbearer race as likely to be “chaotic.”

He further Dr. Bawumia’s nationwide recognition, saying the former Vice President toured the whole of Ghana since 2008 as running mate, through to 2024 as presidential candidate.

Dr. Bawumia’s aide continued, “As presidential aspirant now, he’s going to tour the whole country. And so, at every corner of this country, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is known.”

Dr. Bawumia on Wednesday, October 15, 2025, commenced a nationwide tour of all 276 constituencies as part of his campaign to be elected the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer ahead of the January 2026 primaries.
