Ban on funerals till Asantehemaa is buried – Asanteman warns

The Manhyia Palace has announced a suspension of all funerals across Asanteman until the burial of the late Asantehemaa, Nana Konadu Yiadom III, who passed away earlier this month at the age of 91.

The announcement was made during the one-week funeral observation held at Manhyia Palace in Kumasi on Thursday, August 21, where thousands gathered to pay their respects.

Among the dignitaries present were Vice President Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, former President Nana Akufo-Addo and the former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

Other notable people and institutions that went to pay their respects include the Chief of Staff Julius Debrah, the Inspector General of Police Christian Tetteh Yohuno, British High Commissioner Christian Rogg, and the Ghana Journalists Association led by President Albert Dwumfuor.

A spokesperson addressing the mourners and well-wishers explained that after the end of August, no funerals will be permitted in Asanteman until from September 18, 2025, when the Asantehemaa will be laid to rest.

He further said that on the morning of Monday, September 15, her body will be laid in state for the people of Asanteman to pay their last respects, ahead of the main funeral rites on Thursday, September 18.

He also warned that, that Thursday will be observed as a day of quiet and solemness. Shops are to remain closed, and a curfew will be enforced in the evening as tradition demands.

Nana Konadu Yiadom III, the 14th Queen Mother of the Asante Kingdom reigned since 2017 until her death on August 7 2025.
