Bagbin Assures Passage of Anti-LGBTQ+ Bill as Parliament Reconvenes

The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has given firm assurance that the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, widely referred to as the Anti-LGBT+ Bill, will be passed by the current Parliament.

He made the remarks during the Kasoa Traditional Leaders and Stakeholders Forum, where community leaders, residents, and government officials gathered to deliberate on key development concerns within the municipality.

Addressing participants, Bagbin attributed the delay in the bill’s passage into law to the refusal of former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to assent to it after it was approved by the previous Parliament.

According to him, the bill, which has sparked intense national debate, was shaped significantly by public input and reflects the values and concerns of many Ghanaians, including traditional authorities.

He stressed that Parliament remains committed to ensuring the legislation aligns with the will of the people, noting that the current composition of the House puts it in a stronger position to pass the bill.

“Be sure, I am there, the law will be passed. The law has been processed because of the conversion of Parliament when the former president declined to assent it. When that Parliament ended, it ended with that bill in the hands of the former Parliament,” Bagbin stated.

He further highlighted the difference between the previous and current parliamentary structures, pointing to a shift in numbers and representation.

“You agree with me that this Parliament is not the same as the last Parliament. It is very different… This Parliament is 189 as against 87,” he added.

Bagbin expressed confidence that once Parliament reconvenes, the bill will be passed, signaling renewed momentum behind one of the most controversial pieces of legislation in Ghana’s recent history.

The Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill seeks to regulate issues relating to sexual orientation and family values. It continues to generate widespread public discourse, attracting both strong support and criticism from various segments of society.
