Baba Jamal Mohammed Ahmed, Ghana’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, has emerged winner of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary primaries for the Ayawaso East by-election.
The primaries were held after a successful vetting process cleared five aspirants to contest the seat, which became vacant following the death of the sitting Member of Parliament.
In the final provisional results declared after the polls, Baba Jamal polled 431 votes to clinch a decisive victory. He was closely followed by Hajia Amina Adam, widow of the late MP, who garnered 399 votes. The other contenders were Mohammed Ramme, the NDC Constituency Chairman, who secured 88 votes; Dr. Yakubu Azimdow, who polled 45 votes; and Najib Sani, who received 1 vote.
Speaking earlier in an interview during the campaign, Baba Jamal had downplayed concerns about alleged inducements, insisting that any gifts he gave to delegates were gestures of goodwill and not intended to influence their choices.
With his victory, Baba Jamal becomes the NDC’s parliamentary candidate for the upcoming Ayawaso East by-election, as the party prepares to retain the seat in the forthcoming contest
