Ayawaso East MP’s passing is sad, another by-election - Kwame Jantuah

Prominent legal practitioner, energy expert and political commentator, Kwame Jantuah, has described the death of the Member of Parliament for Ayawaso East, Hon. Naser Toure Mahama, as sad news, saying the country will now need to organize another by-election.

According to him, the death of Hon. Naser Toure Mahama was shocking, as signs pointed to a steady recovery before his sudden passing.

Speaking to the media following news of the MP’s death, Kwame Jantuah said he had been aware of the late MP’s illness through close interactions with the family, particularly his wife, who serves on the board of Sankofa, where Jantuah is also involved.

He noted that he was informed of the MP’s passing by the Chairman of the Sankofa Board, Emmanuel Nii Ashie Moore.

“But I knew he was sick. His wife is on our board, so I knew he was sick. We’ve been talking about him, me and his wife just to see how he was doing.”

“It’s come as a shock that he’s gone. We didn’t expect it because he was getting better. The last time I spoke to Hajia he was getting better. So it’s a shock,” he said.

Kwame Jantuah further explained that he had a closes relationship with the MP’s wife rather then the MP himself as she was on the Sankofa board which allowed him to keep up with the health of the not late Naser Toure Mahama.

“It’s sad. Another by-election,” he expressed.

The death of Hon. Naser Toure Mahama adds to a series of recent vacancies in Ghana’s Parliament resulting from the passing of sitting Members of Parliament.

In Akwatia, a by-election was held on September 2, 2025, following the sudden death of the New Patriotic Party Member of Parliament, Ernest Yaw Kumi, in July 2025. Tamale Central also went to a by-election after the death of the National Democratic Congress Member of Parliament, Alhaji Dr. Murtala Mohammed, who died in a tragic military helicopter crash in August 2025.

The funeral of Hon. Naser Toure Mahama, the National Democratic Congress Member of Parliament for Ayawaso East, who passed away on January 4, 2026, after a short illness, is scheduled to take place today, January 5.
