Member of Parliament for Twifo Atti Morkwa Constituency, David Theophilus Dominic Vondee, has said he will be surprised if the New Patriotic Party (NPP) wins the upcoming by-election in Akwatia because of sympathy for the late Member of Parliament for the area, Ernest Yaw Kumi.
According to him, elections in Ghana are not influenced by sympathy.
Speaking on Joy News’ AM Show on Monday September 1, David Vondee stated, “In Ghanaian politics, sympathy votes really do not work.”
He made reference to the 2012 elections after the passing of former President, the late Prof. John Evans Atta Mills as an example.
“Remember what votes Nana Akufo Addo pulled? If sympathy works, Nana Adoo shouldn’t have gotten anything like 49%. Sympathies really do not work in our elections,” he noted.
Mr. Vondee added, “Elections are more NDC or NPP, whose party is winning, whose party is not winning.”
David Vondee also expressed condolences to the family of the former MP, Ernest Kumi, who passed away in July 2025. He said the late Ernest Kumi was a very nice person and they were very good friends who found themselves in the same committee.
Mr. Vondee further went on to say this election is about how Akwatia is going to look like after the elections, stating, “Who is representing them, who is actually going to be articulating their view in parliament, who is going to speak properly for them in parliament.”
He clarified that voters are more likely to align with the ruling party in Government.
“You have a lawmaker who is coming to parliament to represent you to make laws, this is the man who is related to His Excellency Mahama who is having the goodies. You don’t want to go and choose someone who is going to be at logger heads to the party”
David Vondee explained that with the outcome of the general elections, the electorates will side with the party with more power.
“The point is, the Akwatia people will go for the one who is having the power,” he said,
The Akwatia by-election is set for tomorrow, September 2, 2025 with Bernard Bediako Baidoo representing the NDC and Solomon Kwame Asumadu representing the NPP.
