The highly anticipated Akwatia by-election is currently underway in the Akwatia Constituency of Ghana’s Eastern Region.
It follows the death of the former Member of Parliament for the area, Ernest Kumi, who passed away on July 7, 2025.
Polls officially opened at 7:00 a.m. today, Tuesday, September 2 and is expected to close at 5:00 p.m. So far, ballots are being placed smoothly.
A total of 52,328 voters registered and are eligible to cast their ballots today across 119 polling stations.
The Ghana Police Service has also deployed about 5,500 officers across the constituency to ensure peace and order. On Monday night, Inspector General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohunu, held a last-minute briefing with the deployed personnel, urging them to remain professional, impartial, and alert throughout the exercise.
“This election should be one of the best ever. We believe you, we trust you and we know you can do the work. So do your work,” the IGP said to deployed Police officers during this meeting.
Police presence is visibly strong this morning, with officers seen unloading equipment and preparing for all possible outcomes.

Three candidates are contesting for the Akwatia seat.
They are Solomon Kwame Asumadu of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Bediako Baidoo of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), and independent candidate Owusu Patrick.
