Popular Laboma Beach entertainment spot Pink Flamingo Lounge has been demolished as the Post Flood Mitigation Taskforce steps up efforts to clear structures built within the protected buffer zone of the Kpeshie Lagoon.
The demolition began in the early hours of Sunday, September 13, 2026, at the Laboma enclave in the La Dade-Kotopon Municipality, with several other structures within the designated protected area also pulled down.
The exercise forms part of a broader government crackdown on developments encroaching on waterways and their buffer zones, following an August 7 directive to reclaim protected areas and restore natural drainage channels across the Greater Accra Region.
Authorities say the affected structures were located within the Kpeshie Lagoon buffer zone, where development is prohibited due to the environmental and flood-control risks associated with encroachment.
The Kpeshie Lagoon and its surrounding wetlands have faced increasing pressure from construction and other human activities, raising concerns about the obstruction of natural water flow and the potential impact on flooding in surrounding communities.
The demolition of Pink Flamingo Lounge has attracted particular attention because of the establishment’s popularity and prominent location along the Laboma beachfront.
The Taskforce is expected to continue the exercise in the coming days as authorities identify and remove other structures occupying areas designated as protected buffer zones.
The latest operation forms part of intensified efforts by the authorities to reclaim waterways and wetlands and prevent developments from worsening flooding risks in the Greater Accra Region.
