Frank Afriyie, MP for Afadzato South, has applauded the Supreme Court’s landmark decision to scrap the delegate system in party primaries as a crucial stride toward stronger democracy.
Speaking with Journalists in parliament on July, 29, 2029, he said;
“This ruling is another vital step in deepening our democratic jurisprudence,” Hon. Afriyie declared. He stressed that political parties draw their strength from the people and insisted that every member in good standing deserves a voice in choosing leaders.
“If we cultivate a culture where everyone who matters—the very people we wield power on behalf of—participate fully in our democratic processes, then the grip of corruption and the myth that money decides elections will gradually fade away,” he emphasized.
Acknowledging initial challenges in expanding primaries to the whole membership, Hon. Afriyie recalled the NDC’s 2015 effort to broaden participation. Despite hurdles, he insisted, the benefits far outweigh the problems.
“This Supreme Court verdict is a win for Ghana—a victory for democracy and a knockdown of the belief that the candidate with the fattest wallet always wins,” he affirmed.
“When politicians do their jobs diligently, voters will choose the right leaders, no matter the money involved.”
