We’re producing future MPs to take over as I’ll be retiring soon – Okudzeto Ablakwa

Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has hinted at his eventual retirement from politics as a Member of Parliament.

According to him, young people from the constituency are being trained and supported to assume leadership roles in the future, including positions in Parliament.

Speaking at an event held at Juapong on December 29, where he enrolled an additional 50 tertiary students onto his scholarship scheme, the North Tongu MP said: “We are producing engineers, we are producing lawyers, we are producing aeronautical engineers, we are producing future MPs who will take over from me, because I’ll be retiring soon.”

He then expressed pride in the academic progress being made by students from the constituency, attributing the success to sustained investments across basic, secondary and tertiary education.

According to him, these investments are beginning to yield tangible results, with beneficiaries excelling in various professional fields.

He cited the example of a former scholarship beneficiary who graduated with a first class degree in aeronautical engineering and is expected to receive further sponsorship to pursue a master’s programme in the United States.

The enrolment of the additional 50 tertiary students has increased the total number of beneficiaries under the scholarship scheme to more than 1,000 since it was launched six years ago.

Meanwhile, Okudzeto Ablakwa has in the past attracted public attention for a vow to resign from office if any government he served in ever chartered a private jet.

Following reports of the Vice President’s use of a private jet in May 2025, political opponents, including Reverend John Ntim Fordjour and Ebenezer Nii Narh Nartey, publicly called on him to resign, citing issues of principle and integrity.
