The Government of Ghana has expressed strong disagreement and has condemned Isreali authorities over what it describes as the ill-treatment of Ghanaian nationals travelling to Israel at the Ben Gurion International Airport.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ghanaian travellers have been deliberately targeted and subjected to inhumane and traumatic treatment in recent days.
In a press release issued on December 10, 2025, the ministry explained that the incidents began on Sunday, December 7.
“The Government of the Republic of Ghana wishes to express its strong protest and deplores the recent ill-treatment meted out to Ghanaian nationals travelling to Israel at the entry port of Ben Gurion International Airport.”
The statement disclosed that seven Ghanaian nationals were detained at the Ben Gurion International Airport without justifiable cause.
The detainees included four Members of a parliamentary delegation attending the Annual International Cybersecurity Conference in Tel Aviv, who were released only after more than five hours of diplomatic intervention.
The remaining three travellers were deported on the next available flight and have since returned to Ghana.
“The Government of Ghana considers the actions of the Israeli authorities as unfairly targeting Ghanaian travellers and accordingly conveys its strong reservations against the humiliating treatment of our citizens at the Ben Gurion International Airport.”
The ministry stressed that Ghana and Israel have maintained cordial relations for more than six decades, with considerable high volumes of unimpeded travel by citizens of both nations.
“This condemnable conduct by Israeli authorities is extremely provocative, unacceptable and inconsistent with our friendly historical relations,” they stated.
Addressing claims by Israeli authorities that the deportations were linked to alleged non-cooperation by Ghana’s Embassy in Tel Aviv, the ministry rejected the justification.
“Following our enquiries, we find the justification provided by the Israeli Government being an alleged non-cooperation of our Embassy in the deportation of Ghanaians in Israeli custody as totally untenable as the facts confirm that our mission in Tel Aviv has been responsive and compliant with international law.”
The statement further read, “The Ministry of Foreign Affairs will this morning summon officials of the Israeli Embassy in Accra to convey our displeasure in the strongest possible terms.”
They also added that the government is considering appropriate reciprocal action.
