At least 12 people have died following a tragic stampede during a Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) recruitment screening exercise at the El-Wak Sports Stadium in Accra on Wednesday, November 12, 2025.
The incident occurred in the morning as thousands of job seekers gathered in hopes of securing enlistment into the military.
Eyewitness videos circulating online show a chaotic scene, with large crowds pushing through entrances and some applicants climbing over walls in an attempt to enter the venue.
Reports indicate that the stampede was triggered by an unexpected surge of applicants who breached security barriers around 6:20 a.m., ahead of the scheduled screening.
Security forces have since cordoned off the area to maintain order and assist with rescue efforts, while many injured persons have been rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment.
Speaking on Joy Prime and monitored by NewsDesksGH on November 12, the Member of Parliament for Assin South, Rev. John Ntim Fordjour, expressed his condolences to the affected families and described the situation as deeply distressing.
“So far the death toll has risen to 12, and still many are fighting for their lives in very critical conditions,” he said.
The MP revealed that the death toll had initially been three but had unfortunately increased within hours.
“According to calls I’ve just received, the death toll has risen to 12. It was just three reported in the morning, sadly it has risen,” he noted.
He further expressed hope that no more lives would be lost.
“We are praying that we do not see further rise. This is most unfortunate,” Ntim Fordjour added.
