Ghanaians react to news of Hawa Koomsons ‘vindication’

Ghanaians have taken to social media to share their reactions following the somewhat vindication of former Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya East, Mavis Hawa Koomson, after new details emerged from investigations into past electoral violence.

On Tuesday November 4, the Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohamed-Mubarak, disclosed that findings from a task force investigating the 2020 and 2024 election disturbances in the Awutu Senya East Constituency had not implicated Mrs. Koomson in the violence that claimed one life.

He stated that the current MP for the area, Phyllis Naa Koryoo Okennor who made the allegations was not at the scene of t)3 incident, and that key individuals who were involved had refused to speak with investigators.

He however confirmed that the case remains open as the task force continues its work.

Following the Minister’s remarks, Hawa Koomson took to her Facebook account on November 5 to respond to the update.

In her post, she reiterated that she bore no responsibility for the violence and called for an apology from those who had accused her.

Hawa Koomson described the accusations as baseless and said they led to an unprovoked attack against her during the Ablekuma North by-election earlier this year, which she said nearly cost her her life.

Some Ghanaians have since taken to their social media platforms to share their thoughts on the development.

Some users expressed outrage, insisting Hawa Koomson deserves a public apology.

Others even called for consequences for Phyllis Naa Koryoo Okennor, who had repeatedly accused her of sponsoring violence in the constituency.

However, some users urged the public to remain cautious until the full investigation is concluded, noting that Mrs. Koomson had previously apologised for the 2020 shooting incident.

The unfortunate incident took place in July 2020 at voter registration centre shooting in Kasoa, where one person, identified as Yusif Idris, was killed and others injured.
