Minority shot themselves in the foot, telecel deal not final - NDC Communicator

NDC Central Regional Communications Director, Gabriella Tetteh, has criticized the Minority caucus over its recent press conference on the proposed AirtelTigo–Telecel merger, describing their statements as premature and misleading.

According to her, the merger deal with Telecel is not yet finalized, and the Minority “went ahead of themselves” with their address.

Speaking on TV3 on October 16, she clarified that the Ministry of Communications had engaged KPMG as financial advisors to assess options for AirtelTigo’s future.

“As we speak, there’s KPMG which has been engaged by the Ministry of Communications as financial advisors who are working on the roadmap on whether we should have AirtelTigo stand alone with investments, or we find new partnership, doesn’t necessarily have to be Telecel,” she explained.

She added, “Whether we are going for a public-private partnership or whether we are going to have a management contract with whoever comes on board, and that includes or may not include Telecel.”

“So the decision with Telecel is not even finalized. The Minority’s press conference, they shot themselves in the foot. In fact, they ran ahead of themselves unnecessarily.”

Gabriella Tetteh further questioned how the Minority could claim to be unaware of the deal’s current status.

“Even me, common floor member, I know how far this deal has reached. You, who is sitting in Parliament, you don’t know that KPMG has not finished their work?” she asked.

She urged the Minority to be patient until due process is complete.

“The Minority should wait. When KPMG is done with the report, it will be presented to Cabinet, government will review it, take a decision, bring it to Parliament, and they’ll have the opportunity to ask all the questions,” she said.

Gabriella Tetteh further questioned whose interests the Minority was representing, referring to their mention of a particular Canadian firm, Rektron.

In their October 15, 2025 address, the Minority caucus in Parliament named the Rektron Group, accusing the Minister of Communications and Digitalisation of rejecting Rektron’s multi million investment in favor of a merger with Telecel.

“According to them, this Canadian company offered the government of Ghana 150 million dollars and an additional 1 billion investment,” she said.

Responding to this, Gabriella Tetteh said, “The MoU that the Ministry signed with the Canadians did not have any 1 billion mentioned anywhere. They should tell us where they got that 1 billion figure from.”

She added that the Minority’s position was suspicious.

“The way they were forcing to pack data and money into that Canadian company, I am very suspicious of this Minority. I believe that they are pursuing the interests of the Canadian company,” she said.

“They should all wait. The right thing is being done. We are resetting,” stressed the Central Regional Communications Director of the NDC.
