We will not end strike until demands are met – TEWU-TUC

The Teachers and Educational Workers Union of the Trade Union Congress have announced that they have escalated their nationwide strike.

The strike began on Friday September 19, withdrawing all services of the union from Public and Technical Universities, the Ghana Education Service and the Ghana Library.

The action is in protest of the failure of authorities to finalize and sign new conditions of service to its members, specifically Non-teaching Staff.

According to TEWU-TUC Chairperson, Salamatu Braimah, when they started the strike National Labour Commission (NLC) told the media they had written to them

“As we speak we haven’t received any communique from NLC,” she stated.

She said they have appeared several times before the NLC to make their frustrations and demands known.

“TEWU has complied with every procedural requirement under the Liberal Act 2003 act 65 1. The strike therefore is legal, justified and binding,” added the Chairperson.

The Union has vowed to maintain their strike until government responds and meets their demands.

“TEWU will only suspend this strike when fair wages and salaries commission receives the appropriate mandate from the ministry of finance and other government employers for us to continue and conclude our negotiations.”

Salamatu Braimah added that until all conditions of service are finalized and signed by Fair Wages and Salaries Commission, they will not suspend the demonstration.
