Popular Broadcaster and Host of Johnnies Bite, Johnnie Hughes has cast doubt on the intentions behind a recent apology issued by former Vice President and NPP Flagbearer hopeful, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
According to him, there have been many chances for the former Vice President to issue an apology and there is a need to question why he is doing so now.
Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, in an address last week, admitted that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government made “mistakes” during its time in office and appealed to Ghanaians for forgiveness. He promised that those errors would not be repeated if given another mandate.
Reacting to this on Tv3 on September 15, Johnnie Hughes questioned, “So from where cometh this apology? Is it a genuine apology? Or is it an apology to become a flagbearer? “
The broadcaster reminded viewers of Bawumia’s past statements, suggesting a contradiction between his previous posture and his current appeal.
“Was it not our very good friend the Vice President of the former regime who told us that the presidency is not a platform to do remedials to correct your mistakes,” he asked.
Further inquiring, “Was he not the same gentleman who came to tell us that the results that his government left for us makes him very proud? He said that on Wontumi radio”
He cited key issues that the people of the Republic of Ghana complained about such as E-Levy, betting taxes, the exchange rate, fuel prices and general hardship in the country.
He also talked about the arrest of people who went to protest against galamsey and the way they were treated, the feeding of expired products to children, among many others.
“What exactly is he apologizing for? Because when Dr. Amin Adam was literally apologizing at the townhall meeting that was held, Dr. Bawumia was nowhere,” noted Johnnie Hughes.
He says these are genuine questions that the former Vice President failed to address at the time, asking “Where was he at the time?”
“So today do we take this apology with a pinch of salt or do we take this apology wholeheartedly? It is good not to retaliate but it is good to remind ourselves that we have seen worse in this country before.”
Hughes further stressed that Ghanaians deserve clarity on the timing and intention behind the apology, insisting that Dr. Bawumia must provide answers.
“Where from this apology now and what is the real motive behind this apology. We must ask him and he has to come and explain,” he said.
