Member of Parliament for Asutifi South, Collins Dauda, is receiving backlash on social media after a video was posted of him suggesting that road development in Akwatia could be dependent on the outcome of today’s by-election.
According to him, the roads in Akwatia would be fixed however he wants the people to vote for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, Bernard Bediako Baidoo.
Speaking to the media at a polling station, Collins Dauda said, “Akwatia roads, we will fix it, but we want them to reciprocate this by voting the NDC candidate.”
When asked by a reporter whether this meant the roads would not be constructed if voters chose the other candidates, the Asutifi South MP responded, “I can’t say that, I am not the president. But if I were the president, I won’t do it.”
He further added, “President Mahama is now the president of Ghana, he is in charge of everything. So if it is development you want, it is his direction you must go.”
The comments have triggered backlash, with many Ghanaians accusing the MP of politicising development and making threats against the people of Akwatia.
On X formerly Twitter, a user with the handle @EazyDoesItPZ wrote, “This comment from Collins Dauda is incredibly unwise. Expected better from him.”
Others questioned him by sharing photos of poor roads in his own constituency, asking how came they have not been fixed. User @kkwhame posted,“Collins Dauda, address your own constituency’s roads before talking about others.”
Several other users share the same sentiment, arguing that roads and basic infrastructure should not be used as political bargaining chips.
