Economic Fighters League calls for committee report on Chief Justice’s removal

The Economic Fighters League has called for the full publication of the committee report that led to the removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo from office

The group acknowledged the constitutional basis for the decision but said that there is the need to interrogate the judicial independence, constitutional governance, and public trust in the judiciary.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, September 2, the Economic Fighters League noted that that the tenure of Chief Justice Torkornoo was marked by controversies that led to the loss of trust by the public in the Supreme court.

The group described her removal as a case of selective judicial urgency, arguing that while swift action was taken in this instance, the same urgency had not been applied in other critical matters

The statement said, “This selective application of judicial urgency has led to the perception, and in many respects the reality, of a judiciary that is not impartial but rather aligned to the narrow interests of the Executive. The outcome has been the erosion of public faith in the courts as the final arbiter of justice.”

They therefore called for a full publication of the committee’s report leading to the removal of the Chief Justice in order to ensure transparency and accountability.

According to the group, Ghana’s democratic strength depends on the independence of its three arms of Government, and it is critical that constitutional protections are not sacrificed for partisan gain.

The removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo follows a constitutional process which began in March 2025, when President John Dramani Mahama received three separate petitions, resulting in the recommendation of her removal by the committee.
