Member of Parliament for Bosomtwe, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, has recounted how selling a pig helped him pay his secondary school fees.
According to Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, the money he got from selling the pig meat enabled him to pay his deposit at Jachie-Pramso Secondary School and continue his education.
Speaking on JoyNews, Dr. Adutwum said after passing the Common Entrance Examination, now called BECE, his father had no money to send him to secondary school.
With no help forthcoming, his younger brother suggested they sell a pig he had received for helping at their uncle’s piggery.
“One evening he said, ‘What about going to sell one of the pigs that I have? I’m helping Uncle on the piggery and they’ve given me some. One of them is a big one, so if you sell it, you probably will make the money,’” Dr. Adutwum recalled.
He said at the time he was 14 years old, with his brother about 12. Their uncle slaughtered the pig, cut the pork into pieces, wrapped them in plantain leaves, and gave it to them to sell. They then went from town to town with his brother and cousin, shouting, “I have pork.”
“We walked to villages where I’m now the MP, in the Bosomtwe constituency. I now go to those villages and towns to visit them and campaign, and I say, ‘I’ve been here; I used to come here to sell pig,’” he shared.
Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum said after walking through about eight towns, all the pork he was given was sold.
“Lo and behold, when I came back, theirs had been sold too. We put everything together, and we had 42 cedis. I had 2 cedis more than I needed!” he said.
Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum formerly served as Minister of Education from March 2021 until 2025 and is now the Member of Parliament for the Bosomtwe Constituency in the Ashanti Region.
