The Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) has picked up Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, following his visit to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) headquarters earlier today.
Wontumi, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), was at Criminal Investigations Department to assist with ongoing investigations, but was later arrested by EOCO officials for further questioning.
The precise details of EOCO’s inquiry remain undisclosed, and Wontumi’s legal team has yet to issue a statement regarding his detention.
Earlier, Wontumi was officially cautioned for alleged illegal mining activities, including operating without a license, polluting water bodies, and unlawfully entering a forest reserve.
A CID press release confirmed that he had reported to the CID Headquarters in Accra on Monday, May 26, accompanied by a legal team led by former Attorney General Godfred Yeboah Dame.
According to the statement, Wontumi cooperated fully, submitted a formal statement, and was granted bail, with instructions to return for further questioning on May 27.
