Professor Mike Ocquaye advises Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo to request for an open trial

Speaker of Ghana’s 7th Parliament, Professor Aaron Mike Ocquaye has advised the suspended Chief Justice, Gertrude Torkornoo to request for an open trial as she prepares to face the committee set up to investigate the petition against her.

According to Professor Aaron Mike Ocquaye, Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo’s dirty linen has already been washed in public by both NPP and NDC so there is no need for her trial to be held in camera.

He argued that the 1992 Constitution clearly states that the process should be held in camera but it will be necessary for the public to see the trial because the public Is already aware of the details of the allegations.

“First and foremost, the dirty linen has already been washed in public, it (the provision for an in camera hearing) is there for the benefit of the Chief Justice on trial.”

“The matter is already so in the public domain. The secrecy aspect is broken. If that is so, then the purposive interpretation enables you, the beneficiary to know and say I don’t want a secret trial,” he said.
