I never hit the police officer, he was the one who assulted me – Afenyo-Markin petitions IGP Yohuno

Minority Leader, Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin has denied hitting and verbally assaulting a police officer during the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) “Save The Judiciary Demonstration.”

The NPP on Monday, May 5, 2025, took to the principal streets in Accra to protest against the petition and the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkonoo by president John Dramani Mahama.

Afenyo Markin trended on social media after a video showed him hitting a police officer in uniform and also verbally assaulting the officer.

However, the Efutu MP in a petition to the IGP Christian Tetteh Yohuno has denied ever hitting the police officer but rather claimed he was the one who was assaulted.

Afenyo-Marking in his petition called on the IGP to investigate and take disciplinary action against a police officer, Constable Forson, for allegedly assaulting him during the demonstration.

“Constable Forson assaulted me at the entrance of Parliament House during the demonstration,” the letter dated May 5, 2025, read.

To counter what he describes as “misleading narratives” in the public domain, Afenyo-Markin said he has issued a public statement detailing the events, which he also submitted as supporting evidence in his petition to the police.
