As Ghana celebrates May Day, President John Dramani Mahama has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to creating decent jobs, strengthening the economy, and ensuring social justice for workers.
In a message shared via his official Facebook page, Mahama paid tribute to Ghanaian workers, calling them the “engine of our economy, the builders of our infrastructure, and the innovators who propel us forward.”
He praised their resilience, dedication, and vital role in national development.
This year’s May Day theme, “Striving for Peace and Stability to Drive Industrialisation, Trade, and Decent Work for Social Justice,”reflects Mahama’s vision for sustainable policies that promote economic growth and fair labour conditions.
President Mahama outlined his administration’s key priorities, emphasizing policies aimed at: stabilizing the economy, boosting industrialisation through value-added production, expanding employment opportunities in manufacturing and other sectors
Mahama also highlighted Ghana’s evolving trade partnerships, both within Africa and internationally, as essential for creating new markets for local goods and services.
His administration’s flagship 24-hour economy initiative was underscored as a central pillar in ensuring continuous productivity and increased job availability.
As part of his 120-day social contract, Mahama pledged to deliver:
- Fair wages for workers
- Safe and dignified workplaces
- Enhanced skills training for career growth
- Stronger protection of workers’ rights
He pointed to recent initiatives such as the National Apprenticeship Programme, the Adwumawura Programme, and the One Million Coders Programme, which aim to build a highly skilled workforce and create sustainable employment opportunities.
Mahama acknowledged challenges such as inflation, unemployment, and infrastructure deficits but assured Ghanaians that his administration remains committed to tackling these issues head-on.
He pledged continued investment in education, skills development, roads, and energy infrastructure, recognizing them as vital drivers of economic transformation.
In his final remarks, Mahama called for greater collaboration between employers and workers, urging all stakeholders to embrace mutual respect and shared responsibility in building a prosperous and equitable Ghana.
“Let us work together to create a more prosperous and equitable Ghana, where every citizen can contribute their talents and skills to national development,”he said, concluding with the hashtags #ResettingGhana #LetsBuildGhanaTogether.
