15 MP’s supporting Bawumia won’t affect me – Bryan Acheampong

New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful Dr. Bryan Acheampong has dismissed the endorsement of 15 MP’s for his competitor, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

According to him, it is the 20,000 delegates and not MPs that will ultimately decide who leads the party into the 2028 elections.

On 24th September, 15 out of the 23 Eastern Regional NPP Members of Parliament publicly endorsed former Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia’s bid for the flagbearer slot.

The endorsement, announced during Bawumia’s regional campaign tour, has been viewed as a major boost for his campaign as the region is considered a crucial area.

However, addressing delegates on September 25 in Achiase during his own tour, Dr. Acheampong brushed aside concerns about the endorsement.

“In recent days, I noticed a small group, about 10 standing together, which later turned out to be 15. These individuals, led by the MP here, declared that they were supporting someone else,” he said.

Bryan Acheampong added that the MPs’ move did not reflect the broader will of party supporters.

“There are 20,000 strong delegates in this region who will vote. Fifteen MPs pale in comparison. It is the base of the party that counts, and that base is with me,” he stated.

According to him, even some of those who publicly backed Bawumia reached out afterward.

“After their press conference, they even called me and said, ‘Doctor you know how it is.’ I responded, ‘The youth of today, you like to play’,” he narrated.

Dr. Acheampong is part of the aspirants seeking to lead the NPP into the 2028 elections, along with Dr. Bawumia.

Other contenders include Kwabena Agyepong, Kennedy Agyapong, and Yaw Osei Adutwum.

The NPP is scheduled to hold its presidential primary on Saturday, January 31, 2026.
